SD8 School Leadership Changes for Upcoming School Year

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) announced today that the following school principal and vice-principal transfers, appointments and retirements will come into effect August 1, 2023:  

District-Wide

Principal Ken Wiens is leaving Erickson Elementary to take on the role of district principal for SD8’s online learning programs including Elev8 DESK – a Provincial Online Learning School (POLS) - and the hybrid online/in-person program, Homelinks. Principal Wiens will take over from District Principal Rob Simpson who is retiring in 2023.

Hello parents, guardians and care givers of Hume Elementary. Reminder that our 2022 Remembrance Day Ceremony is tomorrow (Thursday) November 10th at 10:50 (start). Doors open for guest entry at 10:35 am.

Please arrive before 10:50 am so as to not interrupt the ceremony.

A thank you to Hume staff and students for their commitment in engaging conversation and learning about Truth and Reconciliation. Education will be a key factor in moving things forward through the generations.

Each year a large quantity of clothing and/or snack containers ends up in the lost and found. The items that are labeled with the child's name easily find their way home. Those without a label move on to other adventures!

Ktunaxa Artist Mentors Hume School Youth in Mural Project

Since 2018, the Nelson & District Arts Council has partnered with the Nelson Youth Action Network to facilitate an annual youth mural project. Youth artists receive mentorship from a professional artist and work collaboratively to create a large-scale piece. This year, NDAC was delighted to be working with the Youth Arts Action Committee (YAAC) and students from Hume Elementary School in School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) to create a youth mural at Hume School led by self-taught Ɂakisq̓nuk artist, PJ Gilhuly.

Terry Fox Fundraiser 2022-2023


CELEBRATION: For the 2022-2023 school year the staff and students of Hume Elementary raised a total of $706.65 as a contribution to the Terry Fox Foundation and their long-standing work in funding cancer research.

Hume Elementary Family Literacy Week - Photo Challenge

Hello everyone.

Check-out all of the student and family contributions to this years Photo Challenge!

This years challenge involved students looking for createive ways to take photos of their stuffed animals or toys reading their favourite books.

The challenge was in recognition of Family Literacy Day, which takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. 

Several students across the grades were recipents of some great prizes.

Terry Fox Run 2021 - Hume Elementary School

On September 27th, 2021 Hume Elementary School participated in the annual Terry Fox Run.  Students were encouraged to donate a loonie or toonie to this tremendous national cause.  Throughout the past week, the school raised $608.80, exceeding our goal of $500.00.  May we all support the ongoing research and community support offered by the Terry Fox Foundation.
