Hume Elementary was thrilled to host a special literary event today featuring Canadian author Kuljinder Kaur Brar. Students in Grades 1–5 had the unique opportunity to engage in virtual sessions where Ms. Brar read from her books, shared insights into her creative writing process, and explored the deep connection between names, identity, and culture.

Hat tricks aren’t just for hockey. Nelson firefighters have teamed up to make a third, consecutive annual donation to School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) (SD8) to support school food programs. 

As part of their ongoing mission to foster empathy and leadership, Hume Elementary’s Kindness Club—led by school counselor Mrs. Hewson—embarked on a heartwarming field trip to the Kootenay Kids Care to Learn daycare centre. The goal? To build community connections, practice kindness in action, and create joyful moments with children aged 3 to 5.

Spreading Kindness, One Card at a Time

For the second year in a row, Mrs. Mushumanski’s Grade 3/4 class engaged in a creative collaboration with Selkirk College’s Digital Arts students. In January, the elementary students let their imaginations soar as they designed unique monsters and wrote detailed descriptive paragraphs to bring their characters to life.

Since the start of the school year, students in Mrs. Mushumanski’s Grade 3/4 class have been actively exploring science through hands-on learning and inquiry. Throughout the fall and into the New Year, students have immersed themselves in understanding the scientific method, culminating in their own independent science experiments.
