Spreading Kindness, One Card at a Time

Each year, students in Mrs. Wheeler’s and Mrs. Mushumanski’s classes take part in a heartwarming community initiative in partnership with local organizer Pam Hucal. As part of the Gift Bags for Seniors project, students create hand-drawn art cards and write personal messages to accompany gift bags delivered to seniors in the Nelson community—many of whom live alone. These thoughtful gestures are timed around holidays such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter, and offer students a powerful opportunity to develop empathy, express creativity, and understand the impact of giving back. One senior recipient recently shared, “Then comes those who have compassion to help us through these times. The cards are especially welcomed.” This deeply moving response highlights just how meaningful the students’ contributions truly are.
