Holiday Hampers: Hume & Safeway Collaboration
Hume Elementary and the students of Ms. Anast's class engaged in their annual collaboration with Safeway to build Winter Food Hampers for families that could use the support at this time of year.
The history of the project, revolved around Lua Gerun, Safeway employee, initiating a call out to schools in the Nelson area five years ago. Lua, was wanting to support families in need by fundraising enough to give them a holiday hamper. The hampers include non-perishable food items and a gift card to Safeway, to allow families to purchase fresh items as well.
Ms. Anast class became involved in the project and created a hands-on math experience for students out of the initiative. The class annually invites parents and grandparents in to help students shop for items. The students have a goal to select grocery items that will bring them as close to $100 as possible. The items need to be suitable for a holiday meal. Students then run the items through the cash register to see how close they got to their goal and bag up the hamper items to finish. Last school year (2023-2024) the event became extra special to the class as they chose to step it up and create holiday crafts, which were sold at Safeway and a local craft fair. The extra proceeds were utilized to create even more hampers for families.
Thank you students of Ms. Anast class, Safeway and all participating adult volunteers. A wonderful kindness initiative driving the holiday spirit.
