Every Child Matters: Reflection, Safety, and Belonging

On September 29, our Hume community gathered for an Orange Shirt Day assembly to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Together, we honoured residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and remembered the children who never returned home. Our gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of “Every Child Matters” and our responsibility to listen, learn, and help every child feel valued and safe.
As part of this learning, students created feathers in response to the question, “What makes me feel safe at school?” These feathers will be assembled on the wings of a large eagle poster, with the eagle representing protection and safety in our school display. Bringing students’ reflections together will create a meaningful reminder of the relationships, actions, and spaces that help children feel secure and connected.

We appreciate the thought and care students and staff brought to this work. Their contributions remind us that building belonging is an everyday responsibility, and that our learning about truth and reconciliation continues throughout the year.
