Big Hearts, Little Friends – Kindness Club Spreads Joy at Kootenay Kids

As part of their ongoing mission to foster empathy and leadership, Hume Elementary’s Kindness Club—led by school counselor Mrs. Hewson—embarked on a heartwarming field trip to the Kootenay Kids Care to Learn daycare centre. The goal? To build community connections, practice kindness in action, and create joyful moments with children aged 3 to 5.

During their visit, the Grade 5/6 students spent time reading stories, creating art, and playing outdoors with the younger children. Through these simple yet powerful interactions, Hume students explored key social-emotional skills such as empathy, communication, perspective-taking, and positive role modeling.

Some of the most touching highlights included the heartfelt hugs and high fives exchanged at the end of the visit, and the delight of seeing daycare children light up in the presence of their “cool” older buddies. For many of the Hume students, especially those who are the youngest in their own families, stepping into a “big sibling” role offered a new and meaningful leadership experience.

The field trip not only reminded students of the power of kindness but also highlighted how intergenerational connections can spark joy, confidence, and community spirit. A special thank you to Ms. Hewson for organizing this memorable opportunity to make a difference—one small act of kindness at a time.
