Good day, Hume Elementary School Community.

So great to see all your kids over the last couple of weeks. So far, I have spent time dancing with the kindie’s, playing tag, soccer, playing in the dirt and doing gymnastics. Today some students inspired me to throw down a cart-wheel and round-off. Still got it!  So many smiles and positive interactions throughout the classrooms and school.  We have just over 200 students registered this year with 32 new kindergarten students joining us. As in other years we have had many new students join the school from within district, other provinces, and internationally. I love the relative diversity that Hume represents in the Nelson Community.

Many of the classes have made their first annual trip out to Kokanee to engage with some outdoor learning, play, and knowledge building around the extraordinary lifecycle of the Kokanee Salmon. The grade 4/5 classes will be headed out to Kokanee this Wednesday, September 25th for the annual Forestry Day. Classes and students are beginning to venture as well into the surrounding community and as well make use of the outdoor classroom and seating. Once again, thank you to all the brilliant people behind the outdoor classroom project.

On September 27th, the whole school will be marking the tremendous achievements of Terry Fox and the Terry Fox Foundation.  We will have a school-wide assembly at 10:50 am, followed by a run/walk around the school and Queen E Park. Please have your child(ren) bring a small donation (loonie or toonie) to the school up until September 27th, as we aim to raise $450.00 toward this amazing foundation.  The senior students are busy collecting money from classes, tallying the total and marking our poster in the hall of our progress.

Classrooms have been engaged in some deeper learning into Orange Shirt Day throughout the week of September 23rd as well along with the significant learning marked by the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th. Hume staff and students are invited to wear orange throughout the week.  We will have a school wide assembly on Thursday, September 26th, to highlight the beautiful message of “Every Child Matters” and the deep history that marks this journey together.  All staff and students are asked to wear orange on September 26th. If you have some older shirts (smaller) at home, please have your child bring to the classroom teacher or front office for re-distribution out to other students.

A big thank you to all members of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) who continue to support many events, fundraising efforts, hot lunches, learning resources, field trips, and hardship funds, while tackling larger projects like the mural, outdoor classroom, outdoor seating, and beautification of the Hume School Property. The PAC is always open to new members. We have a highly skilled and passionate parent group. Contact your PAC if you want to have a voice in the school and be a part of many value-added initiatives. There is room to be involved in both big and small ways. Please get in touch with Hume Elementary PAC humeschoolpac@gmail.com if you are interested in participating or want to know more.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather, that is September and October!

Reminders

Key Health Measures

  • Please keep your child home if they are exhibiting symptoms (congestion, runny nose, cough, sneezing…) that may lead to a high level of transmission of communicable disease.  We want to keep the student population and all our families as healthy as possible throughout the school year.  We know how impactful it is for our families when students need to stay home.  Let’s all work together to keep this number as low as possible.

  • Please sign and send in any form packages that were sent home.

Take care, everyone!
