Good day, Hume Elementary School Community.

So great to be a part of the Hume Community.  Loads of families were out at Kokanee Creek Park over the weekend from a whole host of schools.  Fun to see the kids flying around the park together, games in the field with parents/kids, and enjoyment being had on the trails.  Hope this long weekend found everyone enjoying families, the outdoors, activities with the kids or relaxing at home.

Celebrations & Highlights

There sure is a lot going on at Hume Elementary School as we build up through May/June 2024.  Ms. Keenan’s class has been working on their skills in the pool through a series of 10 Wednesday sessions with Ms. Keenan as their pro instructor.  The classes of Ms. Newth, Ms. Mushumanski, and Ms. Wheeler had also been engaged in swim lessons as all our grade 2-3’s gain exposure to swimming skills on a series of Fridays.  Ms. Smith’s class just recently released their Sockeye Salmon into the Columbia River out at the Castlegar Millennium Park as a part of the FINS program.  Ms. Mushumanski’s class also recently released their classes Kokanee Salmon fry into Redfish Creek.  Ms. Wheeler’s class celebrated their Medieval unit of study with games and fun in May. 10th.  On May. 13th, Mr. Chirico’s class made their annual trip to the top of the flag-pole trail (Pulpit Rock) to replace the Canadian Flag that is flown up there.  A beautiful community service piece that we at Hume get to be a part of each year.  We had the Variety Show put on by Mr. Nugent-Smith and a whole host of students from across the school on Wednesday, May. 15th.  We had approximately 60 parents join us, along with Montessori Daycare staff/students and some of the Cornerstone staff to cheer on the amazing skills and talents of the Hume Students.  It was a fabulous show, and we were all proud of the bravery and courage of those students who took the stage. Great work!

Finally, to cap off the week (May. 17th) we enjoyed a School-Wide Artstarts Show of Arche Brasil.  A tremendous show celebrating the art and music of Brasil.  This is just a snapshot of some of the amazing work and experiences happening throughout the school.

This week we have the Ice Cream Social primed and ready to execute on May. 23rd (Thursday).  A fun community event to bring us all together.

VOLUNTEERS: We need a lot of volunteers to make this fantastic event possible. Please sign up to volunteer and/or bake cakes on the attached spreadsheet.  We need a few more cakes and positions filled with volunteers.  Specifically, we need volunteers for ‘go gater’ and prize room for the second shift.  Also, last call for any bakers for cakes and any bought cakes are also welcome as a donation!
