Principals Message: November 2021

Good evening Hume School community.

Hard to believe we are already at the end of November and only three weeks away from winter vacation.  For anyone from this area, the weather certainly feels a little strange as we are confronted with an unusual amount of rain and a slow switch to winter.  The recent snow on the ground at Hume Elementary a week ago or so certainly boosted the excited energy of everyone like the play and games outside integrated the magic that only snow can provide.

It has been such a joy getting to know the students over the past three months.  I am truly grateful for the opportunity to slowly get to know the unique aspects of each child in the school.

Despite the realities that COVID still presents in our communities and schools, it has been so nice to be able to nudge into some aspects of “normal” in the school experiences.  Some of these experiences have included:

- Field trips off-site: Touchstones exhibit, Kokanee Park, Pulpit Rock, and visitations to local green spaces,
- Guest speakers: Avalanche awareness, CBEEN, WildSafe BC Biologist, Indigenous knowledge keepers, etc,
- Cross class collaboration,
- Hot lunch and parent volunteers supporting school field trips, and
- In-person meetings (when supportive to the context).

A thank you to all our parents who have supported us in a myriad of ways whether it be through the PAC executive, hot lunch program coordination and distribution, fall/winter fundraisers, spirit wear, and class support for field trips.  These small supportive ways parents can participate have and are so important to building community.

Important Updates

COVID-19 Vaccination for Children Ages 5-11: COVID-19 vaccination is now authorized by Health Canada for children five and older. Getting young people vaccinated helps protect them and the people around them.  As a school community, we want to ensure our families receive trusted information about vaccines.

Please find the following BCCDC link which will provide information about COVID-19 vaccines for families of students aged 5-11:  BCCDC COVID-19 Vaccination for children 5-11 years old resource

As well, a current link to this week’s ministry COVID-19 update for more information and resources on this topic.

Parent Advisory Updates

Hot lunch and pizza day are up and running.  Parents/guardians, please keep your eyes open for the email/class dojo instructions for new session orders.  No late orders will be accepted. Please send your child with a spoon or fork, to remain at school, for all hot lunches.

Mask Reminder

Please send your child with a labeled cloth mask each day.  Currently, the school is going through a lot of disposable masks, which all end up in the trash.  In some cases, it is the same children accessing the masks each day.  Teachers are on their end trying to reinforce with students the routine of keeping a mask throughout the day.  It is perhaps just a consequence of the time, but nice if we can all do our part to keep as many masks as possible out of the landfill.

Take care Hume community!
